These photos are proof that you should always look to take different compositions when you find a photogenic subject like St Johns College. The problem comes then when you try and decide which to upload to Flickr......

A classic viewpoint of Oxfords Radcliffe Camera but somehow I've never managed to take a photo from here, which is quite an achievement given the number of photos I've taken of it.

A picture perfect postcard view of the famous 'Bridge of Sighs' in Oxford. I think on balance I prefer the colour version but others may disagree so I thought I'd upload both.

Lockdown may be over but Oxford city centre is still quiet as this late afternoon shot taken recently shows. This is unusual as ordinarily there's a seamless transition from University students to tourists and Language School students. If you want to see Oxford at it's best I'd get there quickly as I'm sure it won't stay like this for long........

From Wikipedia : "Hertford Bridge, often called "the Bridge of Sighs", is a skyway joining two parts of Hertford College over New College Lane in Oxford, England. Its distinctive design makes it a city landmark.

The bridge is often referred to as the Bridge of Sighs because of its supposed similarity to the famous Bridge of Sighs in Venice. However, Hertford Bridge was never intended to be a replica of the Venetian bridge, and instead it bears a closer resemblance to the Rialto Bridge in the same city.

There is a false legend saying that many decades ago, a survey of the health of students was taken, and as Hertford College's students were the heaviest, the college closed off the bridge to force them to take the stairs, giving them extra exercise. However, if the bridge is not used, the students actually climb fewer stairs than if they do use the bridge."

Encaenia attendees disappearing into the Bodleian Library on their way to the Sheldonian Theatre.

You can see more Encaenia photos in my University of Oxford set : www.flickr.com/photos/darrellg/albums/72157629194588410

From Wikipedia : "At certain universities, Encaenia is an annual ceremony typically involving the presentation of honorary degrees to distinguished alumni and to distinguished personages from the worlds of arts and sciences. In most British universities, it corresponds to part of Graduation.

The most famous Encaenia is the ceremony at the University of Oxford, which usually takes place on the Wednesday of the ninth week of Trinity Term (i.e. a Wednesday in the latter part of June). Preceding the ceremony is a procession of some of the participants to the Sheldonian Theatre, inside which the main event takes place. Those who take part in the procession are the Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor, and Pro-Vice-Chancellors, the Heads of Houses (i.e. the university's colleges, societies, and halls), the four Heads of Division (i.e. the divisions of Humanities, Mathematical, Physical and Life Sciences, Medical Sciences, and Social Sciences), holders of Higher Doctorates (i.e. those in Divinity, Civil Law, Medicine, Letters, Science, and Music), the Proctors, the Assessor, the Public Orator, the Professor of Poetry, and the Registrar, together with the outgoing President of the Oxford University Student Union, and the Presidents of the Junior and Middle Common Rooms of the colleges to which the Proctors and the Assessor belong.

The Encaenia is depicted in the film Shadowlands and in the Morse episode "Twilight of the Gods", and is depicted in the Jeffrey Archer novel, Not a Penny More, Not a Penny Less."
