This unremarkable photo was taken with the new Nikkor 28-400mm lens. It's a "jack of all trades" lens with some definite compromises, including an f8 aperture at longer focal lengths. Still, for your basic bird grab shot it's ok, save for the busy bokeh that results from f8.

The weather four our prairie chicken quest was depressingly gray. We had a few moments when the sun tantalized us for a few seconds, such as here, where it illuminated the prairie in the background.

After a windy night this young owl ended up on the grass next to a walking path along a waterway in Kearney, NE My son contacted a wildlife rehabber and was told that the mother would feed it and that it was nearly ready to fledge. She also claimed it could "walk up the tree." Hmmm. It certainly was feisty. I hope it made it.
