Located in the outskirts of Amsterdam (IJburg), this architectural gemstone is an amazing place to look at. The residential complex - entitled Sluishuis (Dutch for sluice house) has a very engaging design by BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group) and Barcode Architects. Built like an angular ring, partly hovering above the water and with a courtyard accessible from the mainland and by boat from the water. For this one I returned in the evening when people had just started switching on their lights.

In this view you can see how the sunlight cuts through the courtyard and into the water entrance. My love of rhythm and repetition is fulfilled by an eye-catching pattern of balconies. The Georgian is a classic hotel facing the Pacific coast in Santa Monica California. The architecture takes you back to the golden days of Hollywood and could be the perfect scenery for a Wes Anderson film. Built in 1933, it was frequented by early movie stars like Clark Gable and Carole Lombard.
To my photographic rendition of this beautiful place I added more wall space and height to achieve the proper minimalist feel.

Made in 2023 when I visited Los Angeles in combination with my participation at The Other Art Fair in Santa Monica. I was struck by the repetition of the arched windows that so beautifully contrasted with the blue sky. The cloud (reflected in the window) and the tiny presence of a man behind the glass breaks the monotony and gives you a sense of perspective.
