Charlestown, near St Austell, on the south coast of Cornwall, dates from the late 1700s when the port was constructed. The new town was named after local landowner Charles Rashleigh. The works were to the plans of England's first recognised civil engineer, John Smeaton, who also designed the Eddystone Lighthouse which was re-erected on Plymouth Hoe after the rock on which it was built started to crack. It is now known as Smeaton's Tower.

The harbour at Charlestown was built to facilitate the transport of copper from nearby mines but its main function soon became the export of china clay from the region's quarries. The inner harbour, just out of shot to the left, is home to several tall ships.
