There is also a pilgrimage church in Freising that is popularly known as the “Wieskirche”, as is the world-famous pilgrimage church in Steingaden. And that is no accident.
The Freising forest supervisor Sylvester Hupf went on a pilgrimage to Steingaden sometime around 1740. After his pilgrimage, he attached an image of the scourged Savior to a tree next to the country road from Freising to Mainburg. As soon as the picture of the popular figure from Steingaden is hanging, a lively pilgrimage also begins in Freising. But not everyone likes this, the parish vicar Joseph Krimmer of St. Georg in particular dislikes it because he has to reckon with losses in voluntary donations. Without further ado, he had the portrait brought to St. George. But the cathedral chapter of Freising, which is well-disposed towards the pilgrimage, has the picture returned to the forest.
In 1746 a small wooden chapel was built, but it soon became too small, and so a new stone, transversely elliptical building was built between 1747/48. This building is now the choir of the pilgrimage church. The master builder is probably Johann Lorenz Hirschstötter, Freising's court architect.
But this little church soon proved to be too small and an extension was built from 1759 to 1761.
Franz Xaver Wunderer from Landshut painted the nave fresco in 1761, the three altars were erected between 1756 and 1759, based on designs by Philipp Jakob Greil.
From 1846 to 1882 Mathias Ertle was Wiess pastor. When he takes office, the coffers are empty. Through a lot of skill, setting up his own farm and purchasing land, Ertl fills the cash register. The priest's house and sacristan's house were rebuilt, and the construction of a bell tower was also his initiative. However, there are also drastic changes in the interior. The rococo altars are removed and replaced with classicist ones.
Today, retired priests act as curators in the Wieskirche.

The parish church of St. Peter and Paul was the monastery church of the Premonstratensian monastery in Freising until secularization. It is considered one of the most beautiful rococo churches in Bavaria. Before it became that, there were several previous buildings.
The first monastery church was consecrated in 1143. It was reduced to rubble and ashes by the Swedes in 1634, along with the monastery.
Antonio Viscari, Bavarian court architect, was commissioned to plan a new church, which was built between 1700 and 1722 by the Freising court mason Johann Jakob Mafiol. But this new building was destroyed by flames in 1751. Abbot Askanius Hainbogen had the church rebuilt, which was consecrated in 1756.
High-ranking artists can be hired for the interior design. So Johann Baptist Zimmermann as the painter for the frescoes that tell the story of St. Norbert. Franz Xaver Feichtmayr decorates the church with airy, light stucco decoration and no less than Ignaz Günther creates the high altar, the choir stalls and the altar figures.
The interior design was completed in 1784.

The twin towers of Freising Cathedral, visible from afar, are the city's landmark and shape the cityscape.
The current building was consecrated in 1205 after a city fire destroyed the old church. It was built in the Romanesque style and was originally equipped with a wooden flat ceiling, which was replaced by a Gothic net vault around 1483. Like many churches, the cathedral was given a Baroque design in 1619 to suit contemporary tastes. But in 1723 the Asam brothers received the commission to redesign the church interior. The reason is the 1000th anniversary of the cathedral's existence. The client is Prince-Bishop Johann Franz Ecker. The work was completed in 1724.
The Asam Brothers based their color scheme on the stucco and frescoes on the high altarpiece by Peter Paul Rubens (copy, painted in 1926 by Emil Böhm, original in the Alte Pinakothek in Munich). The subject of the painting is “The Apocalyptic Woman”. The high altar itself is by Phillipp Dirr from 1625.
When you enter the cathedral, you are overwhelmed by the magnificent interior. A splendor that the simple exterior would not suggest. You enter the nave through a mighty Romanesque portal in the Gothic vestibule.
