This six-coupled side-tank steam locomotive was built in Leeds by the Hunslet Engine Company Ltd., and delivered new to the Manchester Ship Canal Railway in December 1898. The 0-6-0T loco No. 686 operated as ‘Thomas the Tank Engine’ for some years, but was withdrawn from service in 2009.

It has been cosmetically restored as “The Lady Armaghdale” for display in the Engine House museum on the Severn Valley Railway.
