Old rails most likely used for raising and lowering a boat into the water.

During World War II, Halifax Harbour was the primary convoy departure and arrival point in eastern North America. The Royal Canadian Artillery operated a searchlight and coastal gun battery here as part of "Fortress Halifax" to provide an integrated defense for the port. The fortified battery was armed with three Elswick 6 inch naval guns with associated searchlight, director tower, generators, a long-range optical range finder and by 1943 a radar artillery control unit. The battery was decommissioned in the 1950s but many bunkers remain.

Located near the Chebucto Head Lighthouse was the fire-control radar station (now ruins). The present lighthouse (fourth) here was built in 1967. The 1928 lighthouse (second) was demolished in 1940 to make way for the gun battery.

Chebucto Head has had four different lighthouses and many keeper's houses. The first lighthouse at Chebucto Head, was built in 1872.

The 3rd and wartime lighthouse had to be constructed when the Chebucto Head gun battery was built at the site. At this time a lighthouse at the head was needed to help guide the convoy vessels in and out of Halifax Harbour. Built to safeguard the movement of Battle of the Atlantic Convoys, it is directly associated with an important national event in Canadian history.

The lighthouse today (4th) is a very popular destination for hikers, shipwreck divers and people for a great view of the ocean, passing ships and whales.

The lighthouse was built and first lit in 1967
Tower height: 13.7 m (45ft)
Light height: 62 m (18.9ft)
