Wednesday, 21 October 2020: our temperature at 10:30 am is -4C (windchill -11C). Forecast to get up to -2C this afternoon. Overcast. Sunrise is at 8:11 am and sunset is at 6:29 pm.

Yesterday, 20 October 2020, was a beautiful, sunny day. though cold enough for two fleece jackets, rain jacket and long-johns. I decided to join a small group of friends, all wearing masks, for a walk from Bebo Grove to Shannon Terrace in Fish Creek Park and back to Bebo. A very quiet day bird-wise, and the only photo I ended up with is the bridge photo. My walk started with a painful left knee and ended with an extremely painful knee. Frustrating.

On the way home, I made a quick stop at Glenmore Reservoir by the Sailing Club. Any birds are usually way out in the middle of the Reservoir or closer to the far shore. I was not expecting any birds close enough to photograph, but one can always hope. There were the usual Coots and a few small Buffleheads, gleaming white in contrast to the black of the Coots. They look black and white birds until you see one closer and in the 'right' light. Then, the mix of iridescent colors on the head and around the neck look beautiful. In the middle of the Reservoir was one lone Tundra Swan cygnet. No ice yet, but no doubt it will start to form before too long.

"A buoyant, large-headed duck that abruptly vanishes and resurfaces as it feeds, the tiny Bufflehead spends winters bobbing in bays, estuaries, reservoirs, and lakes. Males are striking black-and white from a distance. A closer look at the head shows glossy green and purple setting off the striking white patch. Females are a subdued gray-brown with a neat white patch on the cheek. Bufflehead nest in old woodpecker holes, particularly those made by Northern Flickers, in the forests of northern North America." From AllAboutBirds.
