This Wilson's Phalarope was just a tiny dark speck near the far side of a huge pond. Thought I would post it, despite the poor quality, just in case anyone isn't familiar with this species. Love the sound of the frogs.
This afternoon, I had to wait while my winter tires were changed over. plus a couple of other things, including a brand new recall for my car model! It turned out to be a software issue that affected the transmission in some cars. When everything had been seen to, there was still time to go on a short drive SW of the city, to make sure my car was running OK. This needed to be done before I go on a long drive one of these days.
Not too much to see, but I was so happy to see my first Wilson's Snipe of the year. There it was, posing nicely on a fence post. When I returned along the same stretch of road a little later, all the fence posts were bare. However, I did see two Snipe hiding in the long grasses.
While I was getting my car seen to and then testing it out on the road, "all" the other birders of Calgary had dashed to a local park to see a rare Lewis's Woodpecker! How I am hoping that the same thing will not happen to this beautiful bird as happened to the two owls, one a rarely seen owl here - Boreal Owl - that were seen in a different park not long ago. Too many people and some unethical photographers caused the owl to move on, so yet another 'rare' bird that I have not seen this past year. So disappointing about the owl, as the Boreal Owl is the only Alberta owl that I have never seen.
