I could have titled this image "Kew Gardens" as this is where it was taken, but I chose to focus on the feeling I had whilst shooting and hopefully managed to convey. What a better way to spend an afternoon enjoying flowers in bloom, manicured lawns and glorious weather?

Fear is well rooted in human evolution. Our ancestors feared imminent danger, be it fear from predators roaming around or erupting volcanos. Such fear protected them from physical danger. Nowadays, individuals often fear situations where the stakes are much lower, but their body and brain still treat the threat as lethal. This triggers an extreme, and often unnecessary, fear-freeze reaction, a cycle which is difficult to break. As a result, people tend to avoid challenges or situations that could highly benefit them in the long future.

To let go of fears, especially those which are deeply rooted, is no small task. However, a most certain way to fail conquer those fears is never attempt to try.

I heard someone say that “courage is not the absence of fear, but the knowledge that there are more important, more vital things than fear itself”.

Peak District, Derbyshire.

Many togs trot from location to location shooting from sunrise to sunset, and that’s great. This wonderful hobby gets us out to the fresh (and at times chilly) air. For me, it is the other way around. The most important thing for me is actually being there, in the great outdoors; and mostly, I remember to take the camera with me. I have found time and again that nature has its own unique way of surprising and challenging me.

What I love about the outdoors varies. It includes snow-capped mountains, lush green valleys, gorges, steep cliffs, and let us not forget the sound and sight of the ocean. There is such clarity when outdoors, that even when I take the wrong path, I always know that I will find my way back.

In the wild there are no walls, and the only barriers are those you impose on yourself.

Iceland has been long on my list of places to visit. One of those that you know fully well even before setting a step there, that you are already planning your next visit. The place is a truly photographer’s playground, where you can experience nature in all its wildness, minus the hordes of tourists, that is. And here’s the thing. Iceland is not the same place a bunch of adventurous photographers kept a secret a few decades ago. The masses have discovered it together with their iPhones and selfie sticks.

I did not have a chance of seeing the Northern Lights or the aurora borealis, but have seen so much wild beauty there that warrants a few return trips. This image was taken at the Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon, a mere five hours drive from Reykjavik. The lagoon is teeming with wildlife, and I have seen a few curious seals popping their heads and observing the crowds. Note to self, bring a telephoto lens next time!

Have a great week ahead, flickerites!
