Class 40028 " Samaria" crosses over onto the up line as she approaches Ellesmere Port East Yard with a afternoon coal and oil train from Warrington Arpley. A lot has changed in this scene since I took the photo which is taken from Ellesmere Port No 5 Signal Box.
In those days as a young 24 year old I used to cycle to work at the Shell Stanlow Refinery and if I got chance on the way home I would call and have a brew with the bobby in the box and hopefully get a forty on one of the evening freights.
The box I am stood on has long since gone as have the cooling towers and power stations of Ince A&B in the distance. The row of small round tanks above the forty where part of the old Shell Lube Oils plant which are no more and to the left of the front of the engine are the old Manchester Ship Canal sidings alongside Oil Sites Road with bitumen tanks and a MSC brake van in view. These siding were lifted and I believe the bulk of the track was taken to the Llangollen Railway. On the RHS the storage tanks have gone and you can just make out the departure sidings for the Refinery with oil tanks waiting for collection. these sidings also were lifted as all fuel is now transported by road and pipelines.

A busy scene at a warm and sultry Dutton Locks on the River Weaver in Cheshire this morning. Three touring barges prepare to pass through the locks after the arrival of the lock keeper as 46100 "Royal Scot" crosses Dutton Viaduct in the background heading north with Saphos trains, The Lakelander to Carlisle and the Cumbrian Coast.
