RTC The White Rose LMS Class 5, 4-6-0 No 44871 returning from York to London Kings Cross. The Black 5 is seen on the UM through Lincoln Central Railway Station running nine late which certainly helped in that the 1830 DMU to Leicester had just cleared platform 4 giving us a clear view. Sounding superb on the approach 44871 made a fine sight for the two of us on platform 3.

A monochrome conversion of 44871 working around the Mallerstang edge on its way to Ais Gill summit with the WCME.

The last time I walked across the moorland at Ais Gill was back in 2011 to stand in the exact same spot to photograph 6201. It was hard going from the road bridge over boggy land to get to this wonderful vantage point above Ais Gill viaduct. A marvellous sight to see the exhaust rise above the fells before 44871 came into view. Traversing the edge of Mallerstang towards the occupation bridge at Angrholm 44871 makes a wonderful sight and noise on a typical grim day in the north.

Stanier Class 5 4-6-0 No 44871 makes a fabulous sight and sound through the Lune Gorge with the RTC WCME. I was very lucky in that on arrival the Howgills could not be seen with low mist and drizzle. That cleared thankfully to give the fabulous backdrop in this wonderful location. Of note to anyone going here which is never an easy location to get to is that a new wooden fence is now in shot on the down side which was removed in PS. By the time I had walked back to the car the mist was down over the fells and the rain had started so most fortunate

The first RTC WCME of 2024 and what a day it was with a strong SW wind and endless rain. Running about 70 minutes down through a late departure from London Euston 34067 'Tangmere' heads towards the summit at Shap Wells. The woods at this location gave the photographer and his gear some much needed protection. Nice to see some usual faces out today.
