What a fabulous sight and sound this evening at Grassthorpe Crossing north of Newark. The wonderful chime whistle of A4 Class 4-6-2 No 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley working the Tyne-Tees Pullman from Newcastle-London Kings Cross. It was a quick dash north on the A1 after finding out the first location of Hough Lane at Claypole was no longer on with the foot crossing now closed and fenced off. It is a few years since I last stood here but the old wooden crossing gates are still there a marvellous sight in 2024 on the ECML.

It was most frustrating seeing 34067 round the curve at Mallerstang running nine early which coincided with us losing the wonderful light we had enjoyed. Some pockets of golden light were still to be had so a quick turn to my right to fire off a couple of 'going away' shots with 34067 heading towards Lunds with The Northern Belle.

Traversing through the stunning Lune Gorge BoB Class 4-6-2 No 34067 Tangmere heads north with the first Northern Belle of 2024. A lovely hour or so standing below Fell Head on the minor road from Low Borrowbridge watching the sheep graze and the motorists on the M6 head north and south with the River Lune winding its way through the valley.

For the return we opted for Yanwath and when we left the car the rain had stopped but walking up the footpath it started again. Lovely to see Andrew Southwell and Gordon Edgar at this location today who I have not seen for sometime.

Vintage Trains The Shap Mountaineer GWR Castle Class 4-6-0 No 5043 Earl of Mount Edgcumbe makes a fine sight and sound on an unassisted climb towards Shap Summit. The Castle was running forty-seven minutes late at this point due to an incident on board the train at Preston. I hope the passenger is okay and made a full recovery. Some parked cars have been removed from the Salterwath road in the distance.
