22nd November 2014 at St Mark’s Church Hall, London E8.

Organised by the Nest Collective, thenestcollective.co.uk/.

Country: Finland. Style: Nordic Folk Fusion.

Lineup: Tommi Asplund (fiddle), Tero Hyväluoma (fiddle), Alina Järvelä (fiddle), Esko Järvelä (fiddle), Petri Prauda (cittern/mandolin), Tuomas Logrén (g), Antti Järvelä (b).

This band was formed 14 years ago, mostly by students at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. Three of them are part of the extended Järvelä family of musicians from Kaustinen (in the western region of Ostrobothnia), best known through the band JPP (Antti has since joined this group). Their aim was a less traditional take on fiddle music than bands like JPP. Initially there was a significant Norwegian influence through the presence of brothers Gjermund and Einar-Olav Larsen who both studied at the Academy. Though have now left the band (Asplund and Hyväluoma were added), it still plays some of Gjermund’s tunes. I photographed Asplund with a pick up band at the 2013 Celtic Connections Festival, see: www.flickr.com/photos/kmlivemusic/sets/72157632796461364/.
