I'm sorry to hear that Airship Ventures will cease operations, and I am so grateful that I finally took the long awaited ride at the end of September. I was looking forward to taking the longer ride over San Francisco and the wine country at some point in the future, but I guess I'll have to rent a more conventional airplane to do that !

I'm just back from the most fantastic experience I've had in a long time - a 90 minute ride on the Modern Zeppelin Airship that flies out of Moffett Field. The Zeppelin has been flying over the Bay Area for about 4 years now and I've seen it frequently from my office window and along the peninsula. It is a huge and impressive sight in the skies of the Bay Area. My family bought me a ride for my birthday. I took almost 400 pictures in 90 minutes, but my favorites were the images over the salt flats and baylands that line the southern end of San Francisco Bay - many more to come !

It was fun to spot recognizable landmarks from the air during my Zeppelin ride. The ship cruises at about 1,300-1,500 feet at 35-40 mph, leaving enough time to compose images.
This is Facebook HQ in Menlo Park, on the edge of marshland, Bayfront Expressway near the Dumbarton Bridge. Facebook has filled up all the buildings and is already looking for more space nearby. There are ~3,500 people here now and fb wants to expand in the area to as many as 9,600 employees. What do they all do? - push the Like button all day?

Although I've frequently photographed the Stanford Quad from the ground, it is quite a treat to see it from the air. My ride on the slow gliding Zeppelin provided ample opportunity to take a look around campus from 1,500 feet !
Stanford has had fairly strict architectural controls over the years, though some of the newer buildings away from the quad seem to have broken the recipe of Spanish mission with red tile roofs...
