Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden
Henrico, Virginia

Lenten roses and other shade-tolerant plants are found along the Woodland Walk at the Ginter Botanical Garden. There wasn't much shade on this sunny mid-March day, but I like the way this flower looks in late-afternoon sun.

This was taken just over two years ago, when we could come and go in impulse. Last year the coronavirus pandemic caused the botanical garden to close for a time; videos on the website were not a good substitute for in-person viewing of flowers. This year, the garden is open, but tickets -- which must be gotten on line (no walk-up admissions) -- are required. Ruth Ann and I soon will be fully vaccinated, and we hope to get back to the botanical garden, and other places we have missed in a year of staying close to home.

Waddell Memorial Church (Presbyterian)
Rapidan Road
Orange County, Virginia

This handsome Carpenter Gothic church, dating from 1874, occupies a beautiful rural site in Orange County, near the Orange County line. On the National Register of Historic Places since 1975 (75002028), it had been on my list of churches to see for some time before we finally got there in late October last year; happily, we had a beautiful day for our late-afternoon visit.

Golden Gate Canyon & Glen Creek Overlook
Grand Loop Road
Yellowstone National Park
Park County, Wyoming

Yellowstone National Park offers a variety of beautiful scenery. Although we had been to Yellowstone before for brief periods, July 2019 was the first we had stayed in the park. We had three nights at Lake Yellowstone Hotel, and would have liked staying longer, but this was part of a longer trip that included a mini family reunion (10 people from three generations) at my older brother's home in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, a two-day drive from Yellowstone. After being home throughout 2020 due to Covid-19, we're very glad to have been able to take several trips in 2019 -- and are looking forward to getting on the road again in 2021.

Bright-eyed & Bushy-tailed Hunter
Chesterfield County, Virginia

Significant rainfall several weeks ago brought a good mushroom crop, which squirrels loved; seen in our yard in late afternoon after another heavy rain, this fellow -- although slowed a bit by human intrusion -- found and ate a mushroom (zoom lens at 400mm on crop-sensor 80D for 640mm effective focal length). Nearing 1 foot of rain so far in August (as of August 13), mushrooms are even more plentiful now, and more rain is forecast over the next several days.

Near Mt. Washburn
From Grand Loop Road
Yellowstone National Park
Park County, Wyoming

Last year's long road trip seems long ago, over four months into our period of staying home, hoping to avoid cover-19. But for the virus, we would already have taken two 2020 trips and be into planning details of a third. Now most of the way through July, overnight travel this year is looking doubtful, and I have drive less than 500 miles in the last five months, and my camera gear is getting light use. This photo was taken from a pull-off on Grand Loop Road in Yellowstone, somewhere between Tower Falls and Canyon Village. [If someone can tell me the mountain shown here, I would appreciate knowing. Google Maps shows Mt. Washburn behind me as I took this.]
