Lao Huay means "Stream lao" because these tribe choose to live near permanent rivers.The Lanten emigrated from China in search of stability and new mountain rice fields. Legend holds that the Lanten were separated from their older brothers, the Mien, during the flight and made their way alone from China’s Hainan Island through Northern Vietnam, settling here in the 19th century.
