South-west, Zuiderham. You are looking at the remnants of an ancient river called Crommenije. The name of the nearby village is -not coincidental- "Krommenie".
I thank Ton for his kind permission to use his ground as a launching place.

The Netherlands
Aerial image of lake Crommenije (or Krommenie), with Krommenieer Woudpolder and lake Alkmaar in the background.
Once the water of "Cromme IJe" had a brackish character. Nowadays you'll find highly appreciated botanical relics of that brackish environment along the banks of the lake, as well as other botanical treasures in the sphagnum reeds. Krommenieer Woudpolder is known for its meadow- and marshland birds.

The Netherlands-Krommeniedijk
Image of a 19/20th century fortress near Krommeniedijk and part of a defense line around Amsterdam. There are still more than 50 of these fortresses situated around our capital.
In february/march meadows around the fortress are inundated by Landschap Noord-Holland in favor of migrating and breeding birds. The image -made with kite and camera- shows them frozen solid, however, due to a short cold period.
In the background Uitgeesterbroek polder with the lakes Vroon (Vroonmeer) and Weijenbus are visible, as well as the village Uitgeest. © Tom Kisjes
