Lake Naivasha is one of the two freshwater lakes found in Kenya's Great Rift Valley--the others are soda lakes. At 1884 meters (6,181 ft). it is at the highest elevation of all Kenyan Rift Valley lakes. The lake has a surface area of 139 square kilometers (54 sq mi) and is surrounded by a swamp that is equal in size. The lake and surrounding wetlands are home to a variety of types of wildlife including over 400 different species of bird and a sizable population of hippos.

Direct rainfall on the lake and three rivers, two of them seasonal, feed freshwater to the lake. The lake has no surface outlet—it is referred to as an endorheic lake. In most endorheic lakes, salts are left behind when the lake water evaporates, which leads to high salinity, like in neighboring Lake Nakuru. Lake Naivasha, however, maintains its freshwater status because the lake water seeps into the ground, taking the salts with it.

As there is no natural outflow, the water level can fluctuate considerably. Flooding in recent years has led to a higher water level, and the lake more recently has covered 150 square kilometers. The higher water level has killed a large number of trees along the shore.
