The Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin is Berlin's oldest university, founded in 1810 by the liberal Prussian educational reformer and linguist Wilhelm von Humboldt (1767-1835) whose university model strongly influenced other universities around the world. The main building of the university was originally built between 1748 and 1766 as a palace for Prinz Heinrich von Preußen. It as donated to the university at its inception by King Friedrich Wilhelm III.

The Alte Bibliothek (former library) originally was built 1775-1780 in a Baroque style to serve as the Königliche Bibliothek (royal library) of Prussia. Today, it houses the faculty of law at the Humboldt Universität. Berliners call it the "Kommode" (dresser) because of its curved façade.

The Neue Wache (New Guard House) was built 1816-18 as a guardhouse for the troops of the Crown Prince of Prussia by the architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel (1781-1841). The building has a portico of Doric columns; it is a leading example of German neoclassicism. The building has been used as a war memorial since 1931. It was rededicated in 1993 as the "Zentrale Gedenkstätte der Bundesrepublik Deutschland für die Opfer von Krieg und Gewaltherrschaft" (Central Memorial of the Federal Republic of Germany for the Victims of War and Tyranny).
