A Chinese farmer and his water buffalo stand proudly in front of the karst peaks in Guilin. China's rapid development and economic prosperity in recent decades has meant a gradual decline in the rural population as people in the countryside migrate to more prosperous urban areas. Just a decade ago about 45% of China's population lived in the countryside. Today the proportion is about a third of the country's population. This still however represents almost half a billion people who primarily live an agrarian lifestyle.
