There is always something a little forlorn about a tree stump. I won't wax to melancholic over it, I think most of you know the feeling. So when I found this one, and other tree remains in Greyfriars kirkyard I started to photograph them. The image also has a strange coincidentality to it as we are heading out with Owen to pick out a Christmas tree today, a tradition I would never want to move away from, and has become so much more enjoyable when you include a child, but always leaves me with a quiet, sober, little moment looking at the fresh cut stump of the tree. Next year will be a living tree, that will be my New Year's resolution.

For some reason this image reminds me of The Missing Piece by Shel Silverstein. I don't know what it was about the trees... or what was left of them, this day in Greyfriars kirkyard, but it led me to more than one photo.

Continuing on with the pinhole theme in Edinburgh. We don't actually have too much time left in this city, perhaps through this weekend. A few more miscellaneous images of this fine Scottish city and then back home for me to catch up on some Pacific Northwest images for a bit and I'll bring us back for a short jaunt up to Perth. Sort of my plan anyway. But I reserve the right to change that at any time.

Even as the scenery changes, no matter where you go, some things stay the same. Life, for one. The rambunctiousness of children, for another.

Caught this one on the fly with my Holga just after I had climbed down off the partial Parthenon atop Calton Hill. These two kids were trying to descend what they had already climbed as well.

Why is getting down always so much harder than getting up? ;-)
