One of my favorite images from a trip to Rome in 2003. The warm color and the body language of the angel really resonate with me, this shot almost strikes me as a portrait instead of a macro shot.

Actually this was taken inside of St Peter's Basilica in Vatican City, not really Rome. Being a history major in school who concentrated on the antiquities, especially Greek and Roman history, I was in constant awe in Rome. The city is such an incredible blend of the ancient, the old, and the modern. To stand inside the colisseum, which has stood for nearly 2000 years, and seen countless lives pass through was amazing. I knew I would be impressed by it. What I did not expect to be so amazed by was St Peter's. The structure is simply stunning, from the scope of the entire building to the smallest of details, such as this angel carved into one of the columns. I was so moved by my half-day visit that we made a point to return for another entire day, thereby missing a trip to the Ostia Antica or Pompeii. But very well worth it.

As tripods are not allowed, and I anticipated this beforehand, this was shot with a Pentax K1000 and Fujipress 1600 color film. Handheld.

As an added little bit of trivia, this photo took first place in the Telling Details category of The Oregonian's photo contest in 2004. My first award ever for a photo I had taken.

A handheld shot of the Colisseum I took while waiting to cross the street (I had plenty of time). I like this shot because it is a pretty sunset and the colisseum is just incredible, words cannot describe it, but it also captures the fast pace of well, the traffic in the blurred cars.

Two shots that were not a collaberation in any way. It was not until I returned home and started developing photos that I realized I had two that paired so well. Granted the two shots do not line up perfectly horizontally and the flare in the night shot is a bit distracting, still despite the technical imperfections, these are still two of my favorite shots I got from this trip. The day shot was pretty standard, but the night shot was a bit of an adventure, as Rome is not the best place to wander late at night with lots of camera equipment and barely enough light to read a map, and you really do NEED a map in that city. But that is the adventure I guess.

I took this trip back in November of 2003 so not long after I got into photography. I had been photographing fairly seriously for about a year at this point and I often wish I could make a return trip with the experience and tools I have now. Rome was completely fascinating, and though we spent six straight days there and only there, there was still so much left to see.

Shot on my trusty Nikon FM2, which if you have been following my adventures lately, I am happy to report has made a full recovery and was returned to me this week from the camera shop. Hooray! The film was two different rolls, the night shot being Neopan 400 and the day shot being APX 400.

It's not hard to find cats in Rome. I was fortunate though to find these two cats as I came out of the Colisseum's gift shop.
