Alright, after the lengthy dissertation I had on my last post, I will keep this short and sweet, well short at least. Often I will bracket compositions when I go somewhere. Why leave it to the chance that one particular shot will turn out when you have the opportunity to shoot from a few different angles? Film is much cheaper than a return trip afterall. Unfortunately I tend to narrow down rolls to one single postable image, which means, even if I like other compositions, I try not to post them, at least right away, just to keep my stream varied and not redundant. This is an image that suffered in such a way. I took this at the same time as her sister image here at Sol Duc Falls in Olympic National Park in Washington on a very rainy trip earlier this year. I initially, and still, like the other image the best, but there is a lot I like about this vertical composition as well, particularly how you can see the depth of the canyon that these falls spilled into. An amazing waterfall and one I would love to get back to someday. There that was short right? ;-)

A photo of Narada Falls in Mt Rainier National Park, my favorite of all the national parks I have visited. This was, weather-wise, a perfect visit. The sky was constantly overcast and cloudy, we did not see the mountain the entire visit, but the beautiful, even, soft light it produced was well worth the absence of Mt Rainier herself.

I really love this falls, it is so thundering and powerful, but at the same time wispy and graceful. The amount of water that spill over the cliff here can be awe inspiring, but the rocks of the cliff fan the falls out into delicate tendrils of water. Plus the hike from the parking lot at the top, with view of the crest of the falls looking over, around the midsection to the base at the river is quite a journey and a great way to get to see many different angles of this waterfall.

Sadly my pinhole took another fall on the rocks at the bottom. Jumped right off the tripod it did, and as usually happens when wooden objects meet stone ones, the rock wins. The pinhole shattered (again) ruining the couple of frames I had shot. At least being essentially a wood box I can glue it back together (again). Finding myself without pinhole though allowed me to concentrate a bit more on my Pentax, which I have been shooting more and more lately. The large images it produces are beautiful themselves, with the amount of tonality and detail that can be captured in a 6x7 centimeter negative.

This shot is the result of two exposures again, one in focus and the other completely blurry and out of focus. As my Pentax has no double exposure capability I had to layer the two slides after the fact and scan them in that way. The effect is fairly slight and is probably most beneficial in the bushes as it helps fill in some of the shadows.

I took this on a roll of the new Fuji Velvia 50! Have been saving this roll since it was brought back from Japan for me by Scout. Thanks Scout, I love it!

An older shot from Mt Rainier National Park of the stream which becomes Narada Falls just beyond this point. Really just a pretty landscape shot that I like. I came back to this recently because was thinking on the Great Outdoors, (the natural place, not the Chevy Chase movie) and I still think Mt Rainier National Park is one of my favorite places, just a hair behind the Oregon coast, and certainly my favorite of the few national parks I have been able to visit. Specifically I am comparing it to Yosemite, not meaning to speak down on Yosemite which was an amazing park itself, but Mt Rainier still has that quality that Yosemite seems to lack which I enjoy the most, and that is a sense of the wild. It is sort of similar to why I prefer the Gorge over say Silver Falls state park. Silver Falls has some beautiful waterfalls, but they just don't have the same feel to them that the Columbia River Gorge does.

Anyway, an old slide, taken sometime last year with my Nikon FM2 and Fuji Velvia 50 slide film.

Perception is the trick to photography. Photography is all about finding that perception of the world that either makes you or someone else stop and look, even if just for a moment. Be it an exotic landscape or a familiar one. A street scene or a portrait in a studio. It is all about perception. Cameras, lenses, film, exposure, composition, and all the other tricks that photographers carry around in their bags are just keys to help us unlock the doors to the myriad perceptions of the world we can seek out around us. Sometimes, as in this case, we can imagine the scene, but we actually need the camera to realize it. I like this kind of photography the best. I like photography that shows me things I cannot normally see with my own two eyes. I especially like the photography, that in the ordinary, finds the extraordinary.

This shot is the result of a double exposure taken at Narada Falls. A trick I have been using a lot lately, precisely because it shows me a perspective of the world I cannot easily, or at all, see on my own. Taken with the first shot in focus and underexposed a stop, then the second shot purposely out of focus and also underexposed a stop. Shot on my Nikon FM2 with Fuji Velvia 50.

Narada Falls in Mt Rainier National Park. This was one of our early stops before heading up the mountain into the adventures seen in earlier photos. We hiked through the forest down to the stream and up it to the base of the falls. Absolutely amazing geology. A bit precarious, but at least this time all my cameras stayed above water, hooray. Taken with my Nikon FM2 and good ol' Fuji Velvia 50 slide film.
