My omniscope and I sat down for a portrait session yesterday morning. I could not wrap my mind around how my omniscope would wrap my head around an exposure, so I figured I would take it for a spin and see. The results are part terrifying and part idea-provoking. I am sure more of these are to follow.

“What sane person could live in this world and not be crazy?” --Ursula LeGuin

Continued explorations with the Sullivan Omniscope. I think I will have to start a set for these images soon. I don't feel like I have gotten any real winners yet, but I don't expect to yet anyway, it is all I can do to continue to try to wrap my mind around how this freaking camera is seeing, let alone to actually use that perspective in some reasonable fashion. So I figure if I am going to have fun learning this camera, I might as well post a shot here or there so the rest of you can enjoy this ongoing process as well.

In terms of using the camera in some fashion bent to my will, perhaps trying to reign this camera in is not such a good idea anyway, maybe I should just let it go and hold on for the ride. ;-)

So this is sunset over the Willamette River taken from Cathedral Park (Area B for those of you who have taken my bridge class ;-) ). I shot the omniscope vertically this time around, and well, it caused the bridge to fall down. Actually it took me a few minutes to figure out how I wanted to orient this image, rather vertically like this or rotated 90 degrees counter clockwise so the tower was oriented correctly. But then the horizon would have run vertically... Ahh decisions, decisions.

My continued explorations with the Sullivan Omniscope. Certainly not a smashing success but I don't mind sharing my continued explorations. Their newness is fascinating, but hopefully I learn how to apply this thing in some sort of controllable fashion.

The tricky thing with this camera is whatever is directly in front of the camera is in a blind spot for the camera, so one must angle the camera up or down fairly severely to shoot straight ahead. In this case I did not have the camera tilted back quite far enough, I wanted to shoot straight down the grove. The other curious thing I am learning about this camera is if the camera is right-side up, the edges curve down like they are in this image. But... if you shoot the camera upside-down, the edges curve up. Hmmm. It is a lot of fun bending light. Anyway, I will keep them coming as I find them.

I left this one uncropped, it shows the shape of the negative, which is sort of a rainbow.

Anyway, heading off to the Rose Festival now, may even take this guy along with me. ;-)

I am proud to say I am the owner of a brand new Sullivan Omniscope, one of only two in existence! ;-) This was one of my first shots with it. This is a portion of the dedicated staff at Blue Moon Camera and Machine, going left to right: Nancy, Sean (I think), Daniel (I think) and Kendall (I think). Sorry guys, I just do not know your legs that well.

I am still trying to wrap my mind around how this camera works, and even after seeing the first results I cannot claim to fully understand it just yet, at least not sufficiently enough to explain here just yet. But I promise, more results on the way!

I caught up on scanning some of my Omniscope images yesterday. This one was taken on a trip out to Smith Rock with Aaron about a month or so ago. We stopped to photograph this house and subsequently got run off by the owner in a fashion that was neither completely rude nor pleasant. She was a bit unnerved that we had stopped on a public road to photograph this abandoned house, claiming we shouldn't take pictures because she "doesn't come to our homes, take pictures of them and slather them all over the internet". I tried to explain the images would be really interesting, but she responded that she had plenty of photos of this place. Then she threatened to write down our license plate number, so I offered her a business card instead, which she refused. I was a bit confused and let down. I can understand people being suspicious about what they do not understand, and I am sure she has had lots of troubles with vandals at this place. But at the same time she was not interested in any explanations or being helped to understand how this abandoned house could be so interesting to someone else.

It is what it is I guess. But I did manage to get this shot as we were packing up, getting ready to roll on to Smith Rock. I like it.
