The Plough or the Big Dipper is an asterism of seven stars that has been recognized as a distinct grouping in many cultures from time immemorial. The component stars are the seven brightest of the formal constellation Ursa Major.
北斗星由七颗亮星组成，形似斗勺，易于辨认，故有此名。它的勺头两颗星叫“指极星”，指向北极星，可以帮助我们在夜间辨认方向。
按现代国际星名的命名体系，北斗星属于大熊星座。
北斗星由七颗恒星即天枢、天璇、天玑、天权、玉衡、开阳、摇光组成。先民们把这七星联系起来，想象成为古代舀酒的斗形，天枢、天璇、天玑、天权组成斗身，古曰魁、斗魁；玉衡、开阳、摇光组成为斗柄，古曰构。天璇、天枢相连成直线并延伸约五倍的距离，就可以找到北极星，构成北极星区。
