A girder is lifted into place over 54th Avenue East in Fife, WA as part of the SR 167 Completion Project.
The new SR 167 expressway involves 20 bridges between I-5 and SR 509 (including elevated on- and off-ramps). Many of them must span local roads such as 54th Avenue East.
Girders for the bridge over 54th were set in March 2024.
The SR 167 Completion Project is part of the Puget Sound Gateway Program. The program extends SR 167 from its current end point near Puyallup to SR 509 in Tacoma. The program also completes SR 509 in the SeaTac, WA area.

This new aerial photo from March 2024, shows the immense progress on the SR 167 completion project between I-5 and stretching west toward the Port of Tacoma.
Visible in the center of the photo is the Wapato Way roundabout and the Wapato Way East bridge over I-5. Immediately to the right of the roundabout is a large dirt area where there are two black walls that look somewhat like black slashes in the photo. Those are walls we've built and behind them are massive mounds of dirt that we've built up to support the SR 167 expressway. Eventually, there will be bridges between those locations. There will be a very long bridge that spans I-5 and another over SR 99 near the roundabout.
On the left side of the photograph, the alignment of the expressway is clearly visible. The orange line is actually high visibility fencing and it divides the highway portion from the wetland area that we're restoring.
The SR 167 Completion project, which is part of the Puget Sound Gateway Program, builds the new SR 167 expressway in stages. The first 2-mile section adds a connection between I-5 and SR 509. Later stages will add the connection between SR 167’s current end in Puyallup and I-5.

A new bridge on SR 99 in Fife looks more and more like a bridge every day.
This bridge, located just north of the Wapato Way roundabout will eventually carry travelers over a realigned and wider Hylebos Creek.
The bridge is just one of 20 that being built as part of the the SR 167 Completion project, stage 1b. The project extends SR 167 from its current end near Puyallup out to SR 509 near the Port of Tacoma and requires many improvements on nearby roads as well. Stage 1b builds two miles of the expressway. Two later stages, fully funded, will build the section between Puyallup and I-5.
The SR 167 Completion Project is part of the Puget Sound Gateway Program, which also includes completing SR 509 in south King County.
