Sioux Falls
Big Sioux River
Falls Park
Sioux Falls, South Dakota

5 Image HDR

A couple of weeks ago I got the opportunity to head out west to The Black Hills of South Dakota and along the way I was glad it worked out that I was able to shoot the beautiful and unique Sioux Falls. Located just outside downtown, for an eastern US waterfall photogapher the landscape is quite different from what I'm used to shooting when normally there's lots of foliage, here the trees were replaced by gorgeous rock formations. There's tons of perspectives you can shoot the falls from but I really liked this one, from a foot bridge across the Big Sioux River.

It's been a while since I've been on here, but as with most folks life gets a bit busy. I plan to make more time to check out my Flickr friends work of late, I hope everyone's been doing well and having fun shooting. As always thanks for having a look and your comments and favorites are always appreciated!

Roughlock Falls
Roughlock Falls State Park
Spearfish Canyon
The Black Hills, South Dakota

5 Image HDR

I was pretty amazed when I hiked the short trail down to Roughlock Falls as in my opinion it's one of the most beautiful falls I've ever seen. Unfortunately perspectives of the falls are limited to the observation boardwalk which I would nomally hop over and go anywhere I wanted but in this case I read the area around the falls is very susceptible to erosion so in respect for those who come after me I stayed put. I had read somewhere that the falls had receded 300 ft. upstream in the last 300 years. The falls is about 50 ft. in height and although the closest you can get to the falls is about 150 ft. the foreground cascade really set it off for me.

The Badlands
Badlands National Park
South Dakota

5 Image HDR

When I first visited The Badlands it wasn't a National Park yet, it was a National Monument. I was five years old on a trip with my Mom and Dad, my Mom told me it was really cold for June and very windy but I don't remember that, I remember the cool rock formations and the fossil trail. Oddly when I visited a few weeks ago conditions were similar to my previous visit although I don't imagine the wind was a blustery as it was this day. In some cases I had to hold onto my tripod to keep it from blowing over. That aside, this place is beautiful. Miles and miles of rugged colorful terrain separating an upper and lower plain. One could get lost for hours in one of the most unique places on Earth.

Spearfish Falls
Little Spearfish Creek
Spearfish Canyon
Black Hills National Forest
South Dakota

5 Image HDR

When I made the short hike down to Spearfish Falls in Spearfish Canyon, South Dakota I wasn't really sure what to expect. I had seen some images of the falls but the pictures really didn't seem to reveal any beauty, and boy was I surprised, what a lovely setting as the falls plunges 47 ft as Spearfish Creek rolls past. I was pretty much limited to the observation area for this falls, not because of posted restrictions, but simply because the creek was pretty deep, it was 29 degrees out and I just wasn't in the mood for cold wet feet.

Sunset
Friendship Tower
Mt. Roosevelt
Black Hills National Forest
Deadwood, South Dakota

5 Image HDR

Sunset at the summit of Mt. Roosevelt was perhaps one of the most spectacular scenes I've seen in some time. Located just a few miles outside Deadwood, South Dakota Lisa and I decided make the short hike to the 5800 ft. summit, little did we realize we were walking into history as in 1919 Seth Bullock, the first sheriff of Deadwood, had a two story observation tower built upon the peak to to honor his good friend, President Theodore Roosevelt. At the top you could see for miles in all directions, it was chilly, about 45 degrees and it began to mist as we waited, the wind blew, then to watch the sun drop below the clouds as the rays of light ran up the mountain and envelope us in a golden glow was a moment that neither her or I will ever forget.
