Tolliver Falls
Swallow Falls State Park
Maryland

I’m going to have to give full credit to my good friend Randy Sanger for this perspective. As I was looking for useable perspectives close to the falls, Randy and his ever searching eye for foreground interestingness found this perfect little set up to capture Tolliver Falls and gave me a heads up about it.. The falls is the smallest in Swallow Falls State Park, being only 4 ft. high, it is a cute little falls with a big uninteresting splash pool in front of it, making it difficult in my opinion to get a decent shot of it.

Of the couple times I've been to this park I finally got a shot of this falls worth posting. This falls is difficult to shoot not only because of compositional reasons but also because it is a river wide waterfall that most of the flow stays to the left close to the riverbank. At 16 ft. high, it is the 6th tallest waterfall in the state. Nestled in the Maryland panhandle, the hike here is beautiful as you pass 2 other waterfalls and towering old growth hemlocks. If you've never been to this park it's well worth stopping by for a look, featuring 4 total waterfalls the landscape is simply gorgeous.

The original plan was for Jason, Randy and myself to travel the 23 miles north of Blackwater Falls State Park into Maryland and check out Swallow Falls State Park a park which has 4 waterfalls in a short distance of one another, but sadly due to Jason's injuries he stayed behind at our home base and Randy and I made the trip. It was a good thing that Jason did stay behind as he probably wouldn't have made the round trip hike. Hopefully we can make it back next spring and he can give another go at it.

The park itself is gorgeous, massive old growth hemlocks line the trail that meanders past all four falls. This was the third falls we came across and from the front isn't an impressive sight as it is only 8 ft. tall and river wide, but when I walked up to this spot where Randy was already shooting, I commented to him how much cooler of a perspective this angle of the falls was than the others that had presented themselves.

A shot from a side trip when I went out to Davis, West Virginia last March with good friends Jason Haley and Randy Sanger. This park is just gorgeous, featuring 4 waterfalls, massive old growth forest and a beautiful riverside trail, Swallow Falls State Park is well worth the 30 minute ( one way) detour off I-68 if you're ever in the Blackwater Falls area of West Virginia it's about 40 minutes one way. For waterfall photographers you always want to shoot with a good flow, however there is such a thing as too much flow and most of the falls Randy, Jason and I visited on this trip had this problem. I wished they had a slightly less flow, we had a lot of trouble with splash pool spray and difficulty with waterfall texture. This falls had a problem with both, Randy and I both commented on how we would have liked this falls with a little less water. At 53 ft. tall, in my opinion this is the most beautiful falls in the park.

No posts for a few days, off to Cumberland Falls with good friends, Jason Haley, Randy Sanger and Todd Williams. Calling for a lot of rain, so I've got a feeling the falls will be flowing! Then Jason and I are off to Gary, Indiana for some urban exploring. I'll get caught up with everyone late Saturday and Sunday. Have a great rest of the week and weekend!

Lower Swallow Falls
Youghiogheny River
Swallow Falls State Park
Maryland

So named by my good friend Randy Sanger, when him, Jason Haley and I came upon this water feature in Swallow Falls State Park in Maryland we couldn't believe our eyes! To the left of the photo you can see the blurred form of a fella that was fishing, I left him in for scale.

I'm lagging behind in checking out everyone's work. Way, way busy, and it looks to not calm down until after the Memorial Day holiday. Hopefully I can get caught up by then! As always, thank you for stopping by, and have a great weekend!
