The Ghost Town Of Spokane

In my research for the trip to the Black Hills of South Dakota I took last September, I discovered there was an abandoned mining town that was on public lands and I couldn't resist stopping by. Mostly deserted by the end of the 1950's several decaying cars scatter what's left of the city of Spokane as well as a few buildings including a leaning schoolhouse who's bee infested walls are going to collapse any day now.

In my research of the abandoned Hayswood Hospital I read that it was a hotspot of paranormal activity. So, when I began wandering the halls I wondered if something weird would happen, something I couldn't explain. Well, nothing like that happened, however it's not to say that I didn't find anything creepy and my goodness was this face creepy. Located on a door on an exposed 2nd floor walkway that fact that it was there simply blew my mind and to my surprise I missed a bunch more that I was told were throughout the hospital. Interesting to say the least I must admit I'm curious as to why they are there.
Scenically overlooking the city of Maysville, Kentucky, Hayswood Hospital was constructed in 1925 after the original hospital had become old and outdated. Over the years it received many won many care accredited awards and the US Navy used a portion of the hospital to rehabilitate the mentally injured survivors who survived the attack on pearl harbor. In the early 1980s an earthquake centered near the city caused structural damage to the building and it was abandoned in 1983.

On our way home from our trip to South Dakota we decided to break up the drive and stop by the abandoned Gary Methodist Chruch to met our good friends Letty and Shanya who live in nearby Chicago. As always the church is a plethora of photography opportunities and it's always changing as people bring in odd items to shoot and remove the old ones. One of my favorite items I found on this trip was this old toy that was sitting on the floor of the auditorium that was as decayed as the surroundings.

This past Saturday I had the opportunity to visit the abandoned Hayswood Hospital in Maysville, Kentucky. Scenically overlooking the city, it was constructed in 1925 after the original hospital had become old and outdated. Over the years it received many won many care accredited awards and the US Navy used a portion of the hospital to rehabilitate the mentally injured survivors who survived the attack on pearl harbor. In the early 1980s an earthquake centered near the city caused structural damage to the building and it was abandoned in 1983. After over 30 years of vacancy the 4 story hospital is slowly falling in on itself. Interestingly it seemed to me the further you went up the floors the better condition it was. This area here on the second floor really captured my attention. Although there's a few places in the building that the decay is advanced this room here won the award for the most dilapidated. Numerous holes in the ceiling had created several pools of water throughout the room and on a day as warm as this one the snow melt was creating little waterfalls all around.
Also, so far, I know of two cousins who were born here.

Harding-Jones Paper Mill
Excello, Ohio

Another post from my trip to the abandoned paper mill, it was quite clear that the mill manufactured pulp to create the paper it made, nearby to this room. I thought this stack of paper rolls were interesting it's as if they were in mid-manufacture when they just up and left, leaving them behind to decay.
Constructed in 1856 and situated between what once was the Miami Erie canal in the rear and Main St and Cinci-Dayton Railroad in front it's easy to understand why the company was a industry leader from 1865 into the 1980s and was placed on the National Registry Of Historic Places in 1975. After speaking to a friend who grew up near the plant, it turns out it was at one time a manufacturer of paper used to print American currency. An interesting tidbit I read was that the complex it built upon the cellars of an old winery. The building was abandoned in 1990.
