Rockcastle River Overlook
Daniel Boone National Forest
Kentucky

Last week while out running around Kentucky snapping photos of fall foliage with good friend Chris Morris, we got to visit one of my favorite places in bucket list conditions. Conditions that earlier in the day I didn't think was going to happen. Though this overlook of the Rockcastle River was our sole intent because of the cloud cover that had been forecasted throughout the day, when we arrived to the general area it was full on sun. Since there is plenty to do in the area Chris and I decided to mull around some arches and document a small sand cave with 3 arches in it and a natural tube. As we were heading back to the car, the conditions we were promised finally presented itself and we made a bee line to the parking area that was within walking distance to the overlook. Pushing off trail through thick mountain laurel, rhododendrons and downed trees which left scrapes on my arms and legs, the payoff made every drop of blood I shed worth it when we made it to our destination. I truly cannot express the feeling of awe while standing in this spot and taking the serenity and beauty of Kentucky. It will be a moment I will always cherish.

Bear Pen Branch Natural Bridge
Bear Pen Branch Bridge Falls
Bear Pen Branch
Wolfe County
Kentucky

Back in July my good friend Chris Morris and I got the opportunity to visit a natural bridge that has been on my bucket list for years. Up until recently it was a double bridge with two spans over top of one another but sadly the lower span collapsed probably because of debris impacting it in the creek. It’s not often I am completely taken by surprise but even with the lower span gone this was immediately an all time favorite arch. Seriously, there is a waterfall flowing right through it. Below the falls, a long shallow splashpool which ended at another waterfall with another natural bridge right next to it! Wow! Of all the years I’ve been shooting waterfalls I have simply got in the water getting my shoes and socks wet and dealing with it for the day but at Chris’s suggestion for the first time I took off my shoes and socks and waded the splash pool. Cold? Yes, but that didn’t matter, wading around in a shallow pool on a hot July morning at a waterfall and a natural bridge, it just doesn’t get any better than that!

Fulling Mill Falls
Shawnee Run Creek
Shaker Village
Mercer County
Kentucky

A super last minute decision Sunday had myself and good friend Adam Thompson heading down US 68 out of Lexington Kentucky to Shaker Village for some adventure! It had been raining most of the morning there and I couldn’t take watching it anymore so I asked Adam around noon if he was up for going out to shoot. Of course he was too, so after stopping by the overlook at High Bridge and the old US-68 tunnel we finally headed down to Shaker Village for the moderate but short hike to Fulling Mill Falls. One of Kentucky’s more unique falls, it emerges from the side of the hill about 20 feet above Shawnee Run Creek across from the remains of the old Fulling Mill. Seems to me I read somewhere the waterfall is man made. Though a collapsed tree just downstream from the falls obstructed some of our perspectives we still found plenty upstream and across from where it emerges. Time passed quickly as we ended up spending around an hour and a half enjoying the falls for some much needed waterfall therapy!

A shot from a February shoot at a privately owned turn of the century decaying hotel. This beauty was found right next door and I couldn't resist some shots!

Upper Bell Falls
Unnamed Stream
Red River Gorge Geological Area
Clifty Wilderness
Powell County
Kentucky

Just before the earth stopped I had made my last day out on a trip down to the Red River Gorge with my good friend Adam Thompson visiting some new to us waterfalls and arches. Having not enough time to do any exploring we decided to hit Bell Falls and Upper Bell Falls along the RRG Scenic Drive. Here is Upper Bell Falls, a 7 or so foot tall waterfall that requires a steep but manageable ascent. Perfect flow and great light made this little side trip from our main objectives of the day well worth it! This was my last photograph for two months due to Covid-19.
