St. Augustine, Florida is my home away from home and I've been there so many times I can't count. Although I love the mountains and the waterfalls if I could live here I would without question. Since I can't, any time I get the chance to visit, I do. Our visit this time was a bit overcast. After a wonderful Easter Sunday breakfast at Margie's FA Cafe in St. Augustine Beach we decided to pay The Great Cross a visit. Although crowded I couldn't believe my eyes when I had the chance to shoot the cross without a soul in the shot and the follks who waited for me to finish my shot I greatly appreciate it. Over the years I've always made it a point to visit here, it's both peaceful and beautiful, there's so much history here. Located on the grounds of The Mission Of Nomber de Dios, nearby the the first mass in the new colony was held on Sept 8th, 1565. The Great Cross was erected in 1964 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the founding of The Mission Of Nombre De Dios and the city of St. Augustine, Florida. The cross stands 208 ft. (63.4 m) and is the tallest cross in the western hemisphere.

On a quick family oriented trip to Florida last week I was able to take a little time for some photography. On this morning my original plan was to photograph sunrise at the Great Cross in St. Augustine's Nombre de Dios mission along the Matanzas river however I found out the night before that there was going to be an Easter Sunrise Mass and I wouldn't be able to get anywhere near the Mission, so instead we opted to head over to St. Augustine Beach over on Anastasia Island. Upon our arrival the night before it had been overcast and when we woke up that morning I thought there was little chance that we could catch a sunrise. Well, I was off a little, sunrise itself was blocked by clouds but the as the sun rose it was quite apparent that I had been worth getting up for. For years I've wanted to shoot sunrise here, but it had never panned out. Although this wasn't exactly what I was looking for, I think everything worked out fine. You just can't go wrong watching the dawn of a new day in one of your favorite places in the world.

Living in town, the Spanish soldiers did not live inside the Castillo. Instead they had a rotating guard duty, usually 24 hrs, and they slept and prepared their meals here. The large fireplace in the back offered a place to cook meals and kept the men warm on chilly days.

British troops moved to St. Augustine after Spain ceded Florida to Great Britain in exchange for the fortified harbor and city of La Habana, Cuba in 1763. Wooden second floors were built in the high Spanish vaults to provide more space for quarters and supplies. Florida would be returned to Spain at the close of the American Revolution in 1783
