Rally To Restore Sanity
March To Keep Fear Alive
National Mall
Washington D.C.

The eve of the Rally To Restore Sanity And/Or Keep Fear Alive was one of the most surreal and moving moments of my life. Lisa and I were shooting in the center of the National Mall just yards west of 4th St. NW as massive speakers on each side of the mall blasted Steely Dan's "Babylon Sisters" played over and over again. Around us helicopters patrolled, shining lights on the National Mall and flying around the Washington Monument searching for anything suspicious. It was here, for the first time, I really understood the reality of National Security as threats of killing Marines in a Marine Marathon that next day in D.C. and UPS Planes with packages of explosives were bound for the U.S. from Yemen loomed as a terrorist threat. Illuminated traffic signs on the freeways around D.C and Baltimore read "Report Suspicious Activity Call 1-800-492-TIPS."
