Colonial Park Cemetery
Downtown Savannah, Georgia

Serving as Savannah's primary cemetery from 1750 to 1853 the Colonial Park Cemetery has only about 600 burial markers present but it is estimated that there are as many as 9,000 people buried here. During the Union occupation of Savannah during the Civil War Union troops made the cemetery an encampment and stabled horses here desecrating graves and tombs through looting, removing and destroying grave markers and changing dates on some tombstones in a bad attempt at humor. If one of the tampered dates was correct the oldest person buried here would have been 1,700 years old. Many of the tombstones were cemented to the eastern wall because no one knew were to replace them.

Declaration Of Independence signer Button Gwinnett is buried here.
