This is a photo of the lower section of the Soldiers National Monument in Gettysburg, PA. Dedicated on July 4, 1869, the soldier on the left represents war and the woman on the right represents Peace. The Battle of Gettysburg, taking place on the dates on the monument, had pro-slavery Americans fighting anti-slavery Americans. Between 46,000 and 51,000 Americans died battling each other here.
For those of you who live in the Cincinnati Area...Randolph Rogers who created this monument also created the statue of the Union infantryman that stands in Spring Grove Cemetery. Installed in 1865 the statue is called "The Sentinel."
