The silvery San Juan River flows toward the illuminated front of Raplee Ridge, a ripple in Earth’s crust known as a monocline or anticline to geologists. As noted in my earlier posts of Raplee Ridge this ripple was formed during a period of mountain building around 70 million years ago when the Rocky Mountains were uplifted. The warm sunset light shows off well the varied rock layers of limestone, silts, and sand, remnants of ocean deposits from 200-300 million years ago.
