The Yellow-crowned Night Herons are definitely back in the area, but none of them were foraging because of the extremely high tides. I saw and photographed several of them on my last outing. Photo taken on Horsepen Bayou.

Gotta get that nap in before the night shift rolls around, but that pesky clown in the canoe just won’t go away. This sleepy-head was perched amongst the branches in a tree on Armand Bayou trying to get a bit of shut-eye before nightfall. The tide may have been high, but I can assure you that this resourceful character will not go hungry. I have seen them strolling down our street in the neighborhood late at night searching for anything that might be tasty. A Yellow-crowned Night Heron rests in a tree during the afternoon.

Some have noticed the change in the photos, and I have been silent for a while about my new Christmas present and have decided to let the ol’ cat out of the bag. I’ve gone back to my Sony roots and Santa gifted me with a new Sony a6600. It also has a monstrous 200-600mm lens attached and getting close to some of the critters on the bayou is no longer necessary. Some of the photos are taken from the opposite side of the bayou and there are times when it’s not far enough away. It’s the penalty that I’ll have to pay from the added reach. The setup looks somewhat comical s the tiny camera dangles off the end of the large lens. I’m not laughing a bit as the setup can really reach out and touch some of the subjects that I am after. So far, the results have been extremely impressive.

This Yellow-crowned Night Heron was some distance away, but I was able to pull him in nicely with the new setup. Photo taken on Armand Bayou.

The other news is that my computer will go into the shop tomorrow for an upgrade as well and I hope that only takes a day, but I’m not sure about the length of time it will take. My monitor has been giving me fits as well and there’s a new BENQ monitor just waiting to be plugged in and that will happen just as soon as I get the computer back. I’ll leave comments this evening but will be out of pocked for a short period of time. Wishing everyone a wonderful day and I’ll return as soon as possible.

What to also thank everyone for your continuing support and for your generous comments and want everyone to know that they are deeply appreciated. Take care.

This is a capture of one of our returning, Yellow-crowned Night Herons and the shot captures the nictitating membrane half closed as it sweeps over the eye. It is always closed when they strike at their prey. This one was not doing much hunting as the tides were extremely high and he was merely perched on an old tree limb buried in the mud along the edge of the Horsepen Bayou.

These herons are migratory and return for their summer stay each year. There are large numbers of them in the area and I see them foraging in the drainage ditches in the area. This one stayed put and I backed away and left him to return to his nap time.

I admit that I do try to get close to my subjects, but the 600mm lens does have its advantages. He never seemed alarmed by my presence and I was able to get my shots and back away and let him get his nap time in. Yellow-crowned Night Heron perched on and old snag on the banks of Horsepen Bayou.

Finally, a day without rain here and nothing more than big ol’ puffy clouds drifting by in the sky. Tomorrow I’ll be busy with other things, so I hope the weather holds through Friday.
