A juvenile Little Blue Heron surveys the waters of Horsepen in the wee hours of the morning. Very similar in looks to a Snowy Egret, but with no yellow spats or yellow bill.

I am sorry for any inconvenience that I caused, but the MISERABLE PANDA kept popping up and I couldn’t delete the photo in time. I might add that I still have a love/HATE relationship with Flickr and only stay because of my friends.

This is another stage in the development of the Little Blue Heron. This one is making the change from the all-white juvenile to the blue stage. He was extremely skittish, and I made several attempts to approach him, but this is as close as he would allow me to get. This is not the same bird that was in the previous post. Photo taken along the banks of Horsepen Bayou.

This is the way the Little Blue Heron should look after it makes the transformation from the all-white juvenile stager to the blue colors of adulthood. There’s sort of a dusty plum colors on the head and neck of this particular adult, but they come in different shades as well. The colors can be somewhat faded to an almost black gray. I know that they prefer to eat crayfish on the bayou but have no idea what other prey that take when they are foraging. This one was captured on Horsepen Bayou.

I know that there is a rookery nearby on private land where the Little Blue Herons nest and we are fortunate to have a sizeable number of these little beauties make their way to the bayou. When they are this age, they spend a lot of time foraging for insects and spiders. Photo taken on Armand Bayou near Bay Area Park.

Just a quick note to let everyone know that I will not be around tomorrow and will return on Thursday.

Sometimes I just look at them and wish that they would never mature. I enjoy seeing them in both states, but the all-white juvenile state is so incredibly beautiful, and they are always fun to encounter. A juvenile Little Blue Heron perches atop an old snag on Armand Bayou.

Our thoughts and prayers are with all of those on the Gulf Coast that are threatened by Sally. It’s not a particularly powerful storm, but slow-moving storms can be just as devastating by dropping huge amounts of water in one area and causing massive flooding. Just want everyone to keep the people in Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi in your thoughts and prayers. We can include those people along the Pacific coast in our thoughts and prayers and hope that they can some way control the wildfires that have devastated the area. Wishing everyone safe passage during these troubling times.
