He had me on his scope long before I got close enough to launch a sneak attack. He did allow me to get a bit close but moved behind some growth near the water’s edge. White-tailed Deer grazing on Armand Bayou just south of Bay Area Park. Looks like he’ll turn into a handsome buck. A person is at their mercy when you approach like this and you never know how long the encounter will last. Some can be very bold and allow you to get close while others bolt off into the vegetation immediately.

I’m a bit late to the party, but it’s been a busy day. I spent the morning on the water…what is left of it!!! A puzzling comment. This is another take on the nice White-tailed Buck that I photographed a couple of weeks ago. A bit bashful in this scene as he knew that I was there and was doing a bit of hiding in the taller grasses near the bayou.
The main reason that I posted this photo was to show people what is in the water just below the buck and clarify my statement about what is left of the water. In Armand Bayou where this photo was taken the problem is not too bad….yet!!! On Horsepen bayou, the water hyacinth is once again taking over and parts of the bayou were impassible. Alligator Alley which if the first bend in the bayou was completely blocked. The plants have also enveloped the reeds along the edge of the bayou and the birds are having a difficult time fishing from those reeds. Tides were high today and the Yellow-crowned Night Herons remained perched on limbs onshore. Not much hunting going on. I only hope that they don’t completely block the bayou as they did a few years ago.
Wishing everyone a wonderful Friday and I’ll get to my comments shortly. Have a lovely evening. Peace. This photo was taken on Armand Bayou just south of Bay Area Park.

I was paying more attention to the two Snowy Egrets contesting a strip of the bayou, when I caught this guy out of the corner of my eye. I suspect that if I had been a minute later that he would have swam across the bayou. He kept a close eye on me for a minute or two and then headed off into the woods. White-tailed buck on the bank of Horsepen Bayou. The mixed light was not helpful in this situation.

Just don’t tell the alligators that!!! This buck paused to do a bit of grooming before heading off into the underbrush. He really wanted to cross the bayou, but that ol’ pesky canoe got in his way. Photo taken on Horsepen bayou.
