Not my idea of a magic carpet but this Amberwing was enjoying the trip up Horsepen Bayou. I took a number of photos of Cupcake while I was out last week as he was quite cooperative and so I clicked the ol’ shutter at him a number of times. BTW, Cupcake is one very large gator and is every bit of 12 feet. Georgia gave he the name of cupcake the first time I showed him to her.

He was swimming downstream until we met and had a sort of standoff moment. I kept taking photos and he decided that he had had enough and turned tail and started to run. SURE!!! He actually started swimming away and so I followed him for quite a distance before I was distracted by one of my little Green friends. You’ll be seeing more shots of Cupcake in the future along with the Greenie. He was a good girl….ahhhh….boy and don’t tell him I said that!!

The gator lurking at the water’s edge is definitely the prey and unfortunately the gator is waiting for those little ones to slide off into the water. Hope the little guy realizes that the large gator is NOT his friend. This beastie is about 10 feet long.

Just footnote the I heard some small alligators squawking in a nest about 200 feet from here but did not see the mom or any babies. Only time will tell.

Photo taken on Horsepen Bayou.

Am putting up two photos this evening, but one photo is simply to illustrate a point. This little guy is roughly 2 feet long and his chances of living to adulthood are slim to none. If he makes it to 4 or 5 feet long, he may have a fighting chance, but I’ve seen only one 4-foot alligator as of late. We can only wish him good luck and hope that he avoids the predators and grows into one himself.
Photos taken on Horsepen Bayou!

This is not, and I repeat NOT momma gator tending to her young. I thought that I had made an error in judgement when I encountered this alligator earlier. Mother gators are known for grabbing up their young in their mouths and hauling them to safety…all done so very gently. I also figure that if this was the mother that she would be turned toward me and requesting my departure from HER SPACE!!! That was not the case. I saw a youngster crawl out of the water and up onto the bank. As I continued to watch this male put the punctuation mark on my question at least 4 or 5 times.

He would wait until one swam by him and then would explode and capture whatever it was that was swimming by him under the water. A couple of movements that looked like chewing and then the waiting poster would be used once again. As I have stated previously, life in the wild is not in favor of the hatchlings reaching maturity.

I have no idea where mom was at, but the youngsters were all left unguarded. There’s nothing special about these photos except that they document what was going on at Horsepen Bayou on this particular day. This particular alligator is about 10 feet in length and really too large to be a female. Hope everyone had a great weekend and hope you week ahead is a rewarding one. No need to comment on all of the photos.
