These characters are quite common on the bayou but rarely stick around long enough for me to get a capture of them. This Cormorant was perched on an old snag near the entrance to Horsepen Bayou.

Okay!!! So, I didn’t call him lizard lips to his face, but I whispered it to myself and he never heard me. Not really a story here except for the capture of this alligator catching some rays on the banks of Horsepen Bayou in Alligator Alley. This one was not too skittish.

The title has nothing to do with the Great Egret perched high in the tree on Horsepen Bayou. The leaves on the trees may turn brown during winter, but the Egrets remain pure white year-round. During mating season, the lores change to a most incredible green color and they put on these long flowing white plumes. They can be flighty but this one hung around because he has high above the activity on the bayou.

This is one of my gator buddies or buddettes headed toward the water as I approach. This one didn’t hang around. This could be a large female, but is likely a male because of the large size. Photo was taken in Alligator Alley on Horsepen Bayou. That’s where the largest concentration of these Lurking Lizards are found. Not a lot of green to be found on the bayou at this time of the year.
