Even though we have a few birds like the Little Blue Herons and a couple of Green Herons that tough it out on our bayou system over the winter months we do get some new faces that show up on the bayou at this time! Finally had my first encounter with our Brown Pelican that decided to do a bit of preening at the mouth of Horsepen Bayou! He's perched on a remnant of an old tree that has become lodged in the shallow waters! A most cooperative poser that struck a somewhat regal pose for this shot!

This Brown Pelican just stopped in to say hello!!! REALLY? He was actually turning around so that he could make his launch into the wind!!! Why no launch shots?? I backed off to let him rest! There was also the first time visitor from Illinois to the bayou who had caught up to me and I offered to show him how the bayou snaked around at the mouth and how not to be intimidated by alligators! This Brown Pelican might look like a tough customer but he was really a big pushover!!! A bit of a gray day!! I went to unload the canoe and began talking to a first time visitor to the bayou and this flew up and landed about 10 feet from the guy I was talking to and didn't seem to be the least bit concerned! Taken at Bay Area Park!

Or the one that got away!
Even these guys are bad about telling fish stories! Actually just a preening session on Horsepen that involves our antisocial White Pelicans!!! They are not a cooperative as the Brown Pelicans and tend to leave the moment they think that you are approaching them! Someone asked if we had them on the bayou and the answer is yes! Quite a wingspan on display here!

A few captures of our extremely skittish White Pelicans! I also know that some of you want to see more of the background in the scenes and will work in a bit of the bayou in this capture with some of the reeds and trees in the background!! This old tree trunk has become lodged in a shallow area at the mouth of Horsepen and it's a prime gathering place for these skittish characters! I think they know I'm trying to sneak up on them!
