This Little Blue Heron perched on a branch overhanging Horsepen allowed me to drift right up under him and get a nice capture! He would have allowed me more time, but I was distracted by some movement to left and noticed the open gaping mouth of a 23 foot alligator waiting to bite the whole front end off of my canoe!!!!! Okay the second part is a lie but I was distracted by what else…one of my little green friends! I think I’m going to start calling them my bayou leprechauns! I’ll get to that guy later! This Little Blue Heron was a bit more accommodating than most of them!
Just want to add that there are NO 23 foot alligators in the world! The largest one that we see on the bayou we estimate to be about 13 feet in length! It’s an inside joke because people always exaggerate when they say they’ve seen one and tell me that it was 15 feet! I might also add that the 13 footer doesn’t tend to show himself very often! Distance between the eyes and the nose in inches normally translates to feet in length on the large lizards!

I believe that this Little Blue Heron has his next meal in sight and was waiting for just the right moment! Taken on Horsepen Bayou!
Want to add that I'll be out Monday and Tuesday and so comments may be a long time coming and somewhat brief! Hope everyone has a great week!

I have some time available and will get a few shots in before my commitment to the museum! I found this Little Blue Heron doing a bit of preening on an old dead tree overhanging Horsepen Bayou Alligator Alley! He was decked out in this breeding plumage with a much deeper plum color on the head and his beak has changed to a deep sky blue as well! The eyes have become a deep dark color as well! It’s quite an impressive display and you can see the difference from the normal colors that they carry! I had also talked about my Green Herons in the previous post and found a couple of those as well in their breeding plumage but will hold everyone in suspense for a while!
I will attempt to get to everyone’s photos and also say that the comments will be a bit shorter until I get everything back up to speed! Hope everyone had a great weekend and that your week goes smoothly!

Coming to you from the ol' archives but just wanted to post this shot of a Little Blue Heron in all his glory! A bit of a confusing background but that's just the way the bayou is! Taken on Horsepen Bayou!
