Even though this Little Blue Heron is in the adult colors I believe that this one is fairly young and that the plum colors on the head and neck will continue to deepen as he/she gets older! Taken Horsepen Bayou! This is an old fallen tree that gets moved about by the ebb and flow that happens in the bayou! Some of the old branches are quite encrusted with barnacles! Larry Daugherty Larry mentioned that he loved seeing the Little Blue Herons while they are changing from the pure white to the dark slate blue and I happen to have a few shots of them in that state as well. This one was searching for any bug that he could find on this old tree lodged in the middle of Horsepen Bayou! Wishing everyone a fantabulous weekend!

This is another shot of my Little Blue Heron friend who was in the process of evolving from an all white juvenile to a silver/blue and purple adult. He was hunting along the water’s edge on Horsepen Bayou.

Was able to paddle in closely to this juvenile Little Blue Heron doing some fishing along the edge of Horsepen Bayou. He gave me a number of looks but thought I would just post one for now. This Heron will eventually shed all of the white feathers and turn to a gray color with plum/purple head as in the photo posted below.

Will be on the water tomorrow with hopefully some calm conditions. Will catch up with everyone tomorrow afternoon. Have a great day.

On my last trip to the bayou and the first in a couple of months, I happened to encounter another Little Blue Heron making the transition from juvenile to adulthood. The particular one is losing the all white color and beginning to turn the gray colors it will carry during adulthood. These were taken in some pretty hard light but still show the transitional colors. I hope to be on the water tomorrow morning and only hope that the winds will not be too high.
