A bit of luck has to come my way every once in a while and capturing a bif came my way last week! Just happened to get the camera out from under the towel quick enough on this occasion! I often wondered if it was necessary to keep the equipment covered, but that question was answered this past Monday! I was cruising to the take out point when I happened across a huge gar just below the surface of the water and managed to get THE soaking of my life! HUGE SPLASH!! Ha…ol’ canoe boy got a cooling shower along with his equipment! Quick…grab the sponge and mop up all of the water that the gar splashed into the boat! Camera bag…sitting in the water! All three cameras covered and although the towels were soaked the cameras managed to stay fairly dry! Yeeech! Working from a canoe definitely has its benefits and its drawbacks!

This Great Blue Heron is usually stationed high up in the trees in the second horseshoe bend of Horsepen Bayou. He’ll stick around for a while and then depart announcing your presence to every animal on the bayou as he croaks his way off to another tree. He is very vocal when he flies away. I made my way around from another direction on this day and he stayed put for quite some time in the heavy winds that were blowing.

I know that these views will be quite mundane for most of you, but for us on the bayou this is and extremely rare occurrence. I sent a photo to the Armand Bayou Nature Center and Mark Kramer informed me that the last time a Great Blue Heron nested on the bayou was back in 1974. The nest is located in one of the tallest trees out there and so getting a decent shot of the activities will be quite a chore and 400mm is as far as my lens will reach. I guess I could experiment with the digital extender and see how that works. Hope everyone enjoys the different views.

Am also going to add in that this time of the year will be absolutely brutal on the birds as they care for the youngsters and the youngsters struggle for survival in the Texas heat. Not sure that it’s going to work out and will also add that the location is not the best in the area. A location on Horsepen Bayou side of this little peninsula would have been a much better location with far less intrusion by the many people who frequent the bayou and especially on the weekends.

Many thanks to Trudy for pointing me in the right direction as to the location!
