A couple more residents, but this time some Red-eared Sliders from the same area. Most like these guys are trying desperately to avoid the AlleyGators that you saw in the previous post.

No Groundhogs here, but Horsepen Holly and her daughter Dolly were out on the bayou but found very little in the way of sun today. The photo was actually taken last month on Horsepen Bayou and am not sure what was going. The mother and young Nutria were sitting on a small spoil island in the middle of the bayou between alligator alley and the second horseshoe bend. I suspect that mom had been injured in some way had little concern about my presence.

They are also called a nutria rat and swamp beaver and are an invasive species to the bayou. The only thing that loves a nutria being on the bayou is an alligator as they can be very destructive. If anyone is interested they can check out the website below.

I still have a number of things to do, but will try to make a few brief comments on everyone’s photos. Hope everyone had a great weekend.

A somewhat different post from my usual. These are not the best captures in the world, but they are each unique in their own way.

The first is a capture of a river otter. Not the best shot, but these critters are one of the more difficult animals to capture on the bayou and that is mainly because they are so rarely seen. This one was tucked up under a bunch of brush and this area would normally be under water but the extremely low tides left it open. He was munching on a fish as I approached, but left very quickly the minute he spotted me. I searched for quite some time and never spotted them again. Photo was taken on Horsepen Bayou.

This is one of our large river rats sunning on the old dead tree that washed out of Horsepen Bayou several months ago. One of the invasive species that has invaded the bayou. This one had little fear of me and I had to beat on the branches of the tree to get it to open its eyes. It was still lying on the branch several hours later on my return trip back to Bay Area Park. I don’t much care for these varmints, but am sure that they keep the big lizards well nourished during the summer. I’ve seen more of them this year than in years past.

It’s going to take me a while to catch up, but I will be back to comment on everyone’s recent posts.
