This is my fellow Flickr friend Gary who tries to get out on Horsepen Bayou as much as I do. Gary's very accomplished and always willing to point out the things that I miss on the bayou. I took this shot only for those interested in alligators. Will just say that this is domain of the largest alligator in the Armand Bayou and Horsepen Bayou Estuary. If you look closely at the reeds you’ll notice that the huge 13 foot gator has flattened the area as he moves them. Will also say that even though you know he is here, you only get an occasional glimpse of him. He’s lurking somewhere beneath the water in this area of the bayou. You can view the shots below to get an idea of the size of a 13 foot alligator. My canoe is 16 feet long.

This is another view of the same area of Horsepen Bayou looking south. There’s a large amount of duckweed on the surface of the water which is not normal. On my last outing the duckweed seemed to be dissipating. Hope it’s all gone soon.

A shot of a friend Gary in action. It would appear at first as if Gary is being mugged by a pesky Egret, but Gary is taking aim on a species of bird that is not found on the bayou. Gary was nice enough to share his find with me. Gary shoots for a sit on kayak and is a master at getting his captures from this type of watercraft. The kayak is a very useful tool for photographing birds from the water.
The bird that Gary was photographing is a Ringnecked Parakeet.

A capture from this past week of my outing on the bayou where fellow paddler and photographer Gary and I searched for those ever so precious encounters with the wildlife that forage in the area. Gary uses a sit on kayak for his handiwork while I use a canoe. Either craft makes an excellent platform from which to photograph the wildlife. The slow and methodical approach seems to work most of the time and can get you up close and personal with your subject. You can drop by Gary’s Photostream and view some of his exceptional handiwork. He’s definitely one of the true masters at capturing wildlife from this platform. A keen eye is also very beneficial and I know that there is some hawk blood in Gary’s veins because his eyesight is very keen when it comes to spotting animals in the trees along the water’s edge.
