But it’s still a heron and not an egret. I’m still looking. Just want to say that he birds perched around an on the old dead tree were all fluffed up because the chilly air that morning. Someone stated that they looked a bit grumpy, but the chill in the air had them all ruffling their feathers to stay warm. This Tri-colored Heron was no exception as he was trying to stay warm as well. They were all very cooperative and most were standing around on one foot for most of the session waiting for the warming rays of the sun.

The Tri-colored herons are not accustomed to fishing from a branch and usually are founds fishing in the shallow waters close to the shore. Tides in the area were extremely high on this trip and he seemed desperate to find something in the deeper waters of Horsepen Bayou in the second horseshoe bend. I kept my distance in order not to interfere with his hunting. It is my belief that birds such as this are having a difficult time at this time of the year in our area.
I decided to forego the trip to the football game and so decided to try to catch up.

This Tri-colored Heron was searching around some dying vegetation snagged on an old tree stump at the water’s edge on Horsepen Bayou. It seems to be pretty difficult hunting for them as the tides have been unusually high and they prefer to fish the flats and shallow ponds that are usually accessible at this time of the year.

This Tri-colored heron was so wrapped up in hunting on Armand Bayou that he had little concern for me and I had to be extremely careful not to run over him with the canoe. Taken just north of the bridge on Armand Bayou.

Caught this Tri-colored Heron on Armand Bayou and will say that a fly was buzzing around him and that he was quite annoyed. He turned his head from side to side and from this way to that following the fly. The move by the Heron happened very quickly and with one quick THWAK the little bug became some much needed protein. Too bad I wasn’t ready with the ol’ trigger finger.

Thanks for the wake-up call Bev. I was half asleep. It is definitely a heron.
