Junior is not quite sure how to handle the approaching canoe.

I found mom and junior on a small island at the mouth of Horsepen Bayou about a week ago. I’m sure that mom was wondering if she had made the right choice to have this little guy after watching him for several minutes run back and forth along the shoreline. I could never get close enough for a decent capture as mom had spotted me coming across the open water and moved into the undergrowth as junior continued to frolic along the bank of the small island. The water on the far side of the little island is fairly shallow and easy to cross in order to gain access to the land on the far side. The fawn continued to play as I tried to paddle closer, but this is the last shot that I captured before he moved in the undergrowth with mom.

I’ll just say that I rarely push my exposure this much and must admit that I’ve never tried an shots above ISO 1200, but decided on this morning that the sun was slow to climb out from behind the clouds on the horizon and the opportunity that this deer gave me on the banks of Armand Bayou told me I had to at least try to get some type of shot of him. I have to say that I would have just held position and not even picked up my camera, but my bayou buddy Gary always gets some exceptional low light shots on the bayou and I am always quite envious of his ability to do so. I cranked up the ISO to 4000 and let ‘er rip. They may not be good for large prints, but they are some pretty decent snaps. This deer knew all the time that I was there and kept a wary eye on me, but I didn’t make any sudden moves and he went about his business. Thanks for the inspiration Gary.
