So many issues with the Glen Canyon Dam (center), Lake Powell (upper left), and the Colorado River (lower right). Giant project provides power to seven states, and water for agriculture and rapidly growing cities, sacrificing the Colorado River ecosystems in the Canyon. Now the Southwest North American megadrought has dropped the reservoir to unprecedented levels. Already, the failure of the states to reallocate water shares has required Federal intervention. Upstream reservoirs have been sacrificed to keep the water level here barely above the turbine intake and water output levels. Another year or two like the last few may require sacrificing Powell to preserve Lake Mead and the electric generation in Hoover Dam. Another year or two after that …
On the other hand, It’s a beautiful place at the moment, as I will demonstrate in subsequent posts.
