San Marino is one of the smallest countries in the world and is an independent republic of only 61 square kilometers in size, with its own government and laws even though it is completely surrounded by Italy. A single street leading up to Piazza della Libertà is lined with cafés, restaurants, and shops selling ceramics and duty-free items, one of San Marino's attractions to visiting Italian tourists. The three fortresses at the top of the mountain give San Marino its best-known image and are linked by a path that runs along the entire ridge of the mountain. Although the steep slopes, cliffs and castles of San Marino are impressive enough in themselves, what really takes your breath away is the view from the town. On a clear day you can see the Adriatic a few miles to the east.

Compleet met onbedorven landschappen, prachtige heuvels met forten en wijnhuizen. En op heldere dagen kun je vanuit de hoogte zelfs de zee in de verte zien liggen. Officieel maakt San Marino geen deel uit van de Schengenzone (en ook niet van de Europese Unie), maar de grenzen zijn open en je betaalt er gewoon in euro’s. Eénmaal binnen de stadsmuur kan je heerlijk wandelen in het historisch centrum van San Marino.
